Five Spots to Catch a Sunset In & Around Portland

When people think of Portland, they usually think rain and clouds. But, when the rain and clouds break, the Rose City offers a variety of picturesque locations to catch a beautiful Pacific Northwest sunset. Here are some of the best places to watch the sunset in and around Portland:

Pittock Mansion

Perched atop the West Hills, the historic Pittock Mansion offers a beautiful view of the city, Mount Hood and the Willamette River. The east-facing panoramic view from Pittock Mansion is a perfect spot to watch the sunset. Parking is paid and can be somewhat limited depending on the time of year. Your best bet is to arrive a little early so you have some extra time to explore the gardens and find a good spot.

Mount Tabor

Located east of downtown Portland, Mount Tabor is an extinct volcanic cinder cone that now serves as a city park. With its numerous hiking trails, it is a popular spot for locals and visitors. Bring a blanket, some snacks and drinks, and find a spot on the west slope facing the city. Enjoy a golden view of the city while the sun sets.

Sauvie Island

If you are looking to spend a sunset by the water, head to Sauvie Island. Just a short drive from Portland, this island is a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and families. There are numerous trails, beaches, and beautiful views to take in on the island. Find a cozy spot by the water's edge for golden hour!

Vista House at Crown Point

An Oregon classic, visiting the Vista House in the Columbia River Gorge for sunset is a great option!

Head East on 84 to the Corbett exit. Watch for signs directing you towards the Vista House. Parking can be limited so timing your arrival ahead of sunset is a good idea. Once you are parked, you'll have to choose a lookout spot. Up top where the actual "house" sits or along the stone railing are your best bets! Another option is to head to the nearby Women's Forum viewpoint. This less popular east-facing spot allows you to view the Vista House area from a distance while the lights up with a golden glow.

Cannon Beach

While this coastal town is an hour and a half West from Portland, it's impossible not to mention. Famous for the iconic Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach is probably my favorite spot to watch the sunset. You can take in the sunset from right near Haystock Rock, watch the entire coastline from Ecola State Park, or head to any other beach access point for a beautiful view. Keep in mind it can be cold and windy at the coast- bring a jacket even in the summer!

Astoria

Watching the sun set in Astoria is a unique experience and worth the long drive. I recommend making the two hour drive to Astoria early in day so you have time to explore the town, visit museums, stroll the riverwalk, etc. Once it's time for sun set, you can find a spot near the water, close to the Astoria-Megler bridge, or head to the Astoria Column! A word of caution- definitely keep an eye on the forecast- it gets cloudy and foggy often which can making viewing the sunset more of a challenge.

There you have it, friends. Portland and its surrounding areas offer many fantastic spots to watch the day come to a close. Enjoy!
